Portsmouth County Council approached Ken Rand Partners to redesign and install the school reception area at Springfield School in Portsmouth. Our design team was able to go on several site visits and attend meetings with the head teacher and staff members because of the close proximity to our own office. This gave us the opportunity to get exact measurements of the reception area, have a look around to get a feel of the atmosphere, and talk with staff members to get an understanding of what they would like to see in the new school reception area. There was excellent communication with the head teacher about our designs and we were able to create a reception desk that fulfilled all their wishes. We designed and installed a curved reception desk with a white laminate front facing, inset metallic feature lines and kicker panel and a Maple laminate work top. The three high desk sections were completed with 10mm toughened glass shelves and the low reception desk section was installed with a recessed front panel to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, providing access to the reception desk for wheelchair users. In order to create a tidy and organised work place, we installed cable management ports where necessary to tidy the loose cables away. Another part of a tidy and organised work place is sufficient storage space. We provided under desk pedestals to meet the storage requirements. The white reception desk and pedestals fit perfectly in the already established school interior design and makes the school reception area a fresh and welcoming environment.
The project was a great success and we established a good relationship with the client. The school approached Ken Rand Partners again when they were looking to redesign their corridor and design and install a complete new science lab.
